Born in Argentina, Lucio Fontana lived in Milan from the 1920s onwards, setting up his studio there. During this period, he worked on the Manifiesto Blanco, in which he called for a synthesis of the arts and the abolition of conventional materials, propagating the dimensions of time and movement in space instead. Given the sculptural properties of his famous slashed canvases, it is perhaps little wonder that Lucio Fontana (1899-1968) began his career as a sculptor. Lucio Fontana: Ceramics spotlights work from just after World War II, and into that new reality Fontana introduced a new kind of art – an integration of abstraction and representation, the treatment of ceramics as modernist sculpture, and clay pieces that left the artist’s touch visible on the finished product. Beginning in the 1930s, Fontana produced a body of baroque ceramic work in which he engaged the problems of both painting and sculpture in innovative and productive new ways. Although best known for his Concetti Spaziale—the spatial environments and slashed canvases he created in the 1950s and 1960s—clay modeling and ceramics have always been central to his process. As evidenced by the bulging of the draped loincloth of Christ and the sweeping folds of the robe, Lucio Fontana processed the clay with a view to spatial expansion in a baroque style.
